How Fiji has become a sustainable island paradise in the South Pacific - Loloma Hour

October 22, 2025

National Geographic have named Fiji amongst the Best of the World 2026! Fiji has been praised for making huge strides in sustainable tourism - with much credit going to our Loloma Hour initiative.

What is Loloma Hour? This is Fiji's happy hour for the environment!

In Fijian ‘Loloma’ means to act with generosity, driven by love, and reflects the deep care that Fijians have for their land, ocean, and each other. ‘Loloma Hour’ is your invitation to be part of that connection by spending at least an hour of your visit to Fiji taking part in a sustainability activity that can make a real impact. Whether you’re planting coral, learning traditional crafts, or helping protect Fiji’s wildlife, you’ll play a small but meaningful part in preserving everything that makes Fiji so special.

We have developed four ways to Give Back - through our Loloma Hour. With a number of resorts and experience providers participating your clients can actively engage in Loloma Hour during their stay. They can:

  1. Give back to the Wildlife

From guided nature walks, to learning about manta ray or iguana conservation, or planting the native trees that sustain them, every small action helps protect Fiji’s diverse ecosystems and ensures its incredible wildlife thrives.

  1. Give back to the Community

Experience Fijian culture firsthand, whether it’s through traditional cooking classes, storytelling sessions, or village visits. These activities keep local traditions alive, support rural communities and create a deeper connection to Fiji’s stories, customs and way of life.

  1. Give back to the Reef

Fiji’s coral reefs are among the most stunning in the world, but they are under threat from rising temperatures, overfishing and pollution. By participating in marine conservation efforts like coral planting, reef-safe snorkelling programs or wearing reef-safe sunscreen, you can help protect our underwater wonderland.

  1. Give back to the Coastline

Be part of beach clean-ups or mangrove restoration projects to help safeguard Fiji’s coastlines. These ecosystems provide a home and protection for marine life and help protect the islands from coastal erosion.
